Encaustic painting, or hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The word comes from the greek “enkaustikos” which means to burn in, as heat is required for melting and fusing the layers of wax. Encaustic was a common technique in ancient Greek and Roman painting.
